Reporting Sexual Harassment in Lorain Workplaces

From Avon Lake to Elyria to Oberlin, Lorain County boasts an impressive diversity of large employers in fields as far-ranging as industrial manufacturing, higher education, and healthcare. With a population of more than 300,000, Lorain County is an important part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Area. But no matter where an employee works, and no matter what they do for a living, all employees in Ohio have the right to be free from workplace sexual harassment.

Sexual harassment is a type of illegal employment discrimination. Although sexual harassment can take several different forms, some common examples include: unwelcome sexual advances or requests for sexual favors; unwelcome and offensive sexual remarks about a person’s physical appearance or attire; or, requiring an employee to submit to unwelcome sexual advances a condition of the job. In the most egregious cases, sexual harassment can include unwelcome sexual touching and even sexual assault.

Studies have shown that a sizeable majority of people who are sexually harassed at work never report it. While there are lots of understandable reasons why employees do not report sexual harassment, there are many reasons why they should.

First, the sexual harassment will probably continue, and maybe even get worse, unless someone puts a stop to it. To protect their jobs and their well-being, employees should speak out against sexual harassment before it is too late.

Second, the employee being harassed might not be the only victim. It is not uncommon for sexual harassers to engage in a pattern of harassment, moving from one victim to the next over time.

Third, and critically, Ohio and federal law provide strong whistleblower protection employees for who make a good faith report of sexual harassment. Employers may not retaliate against employees who do make a report. On the other hand, an employer might be able to avoid liability if the employee unreasonably fails to report the harassment.
