If you have followed the news lately, you may have read about sandwich shop Jimmy John’s forcing its hourly employees to sign noncompetition agreements, forbidding them from working for other sandwich shops once their employment ends. With Ohio’s primary election coming on May 6, 2014, voters in Cuyahoga County will soon be voting for judges once again. Ohio is one of only a few states left that select judges in partisan elections. A handful of other states selects judges in non-partisan elections, but most states now choose judges by merit-based appointment. Without getting into whether we should select judges by vote, how do voters know which judicial candidate to vote for? Frankly, in many cases they don’t.

In one of our recent employment discrimination cases, the defendant moved to dismiss our client’s claims from court because she was required to sign on to an arbitration provision when she began her employment. We succeeded in stopping arbitration in that case, but not all employees will be so lucky.
